Runners win Open Cup 1st Qualifying Round

Runners beat Coyotes 3-2 in 1st Open Cup qualifying win

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – San Antonio Runners secure a 3-2 victory in the 1st Qualifying Round of the 2020 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, against Coyotes FC of Temple, TX.

The history-filled annual tournament, entering its 107th year, is the only high-profile event in American sports teams that grants amateur sides the opportunity, should they advance far enough, to face professional clubs in meaningful competetion. This is the second year the Runners have entered the US Open Cup, and the first time they have adavanced to the second qualifying round. The Runners were 1 of 88 amateur teams across the nation approved for this year's tournament advancing to the second round as only 1 of 6 amateur teams in Texas.

The first half started off fast, with a goal from Bryan Flores in the 6th minute assisted by John Mendoza. As the half continued the Coyotes scored in the 21st minute to tie the game. 

In the second half the Runners broke away, with Bryan Flores getting fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick. John Mendoza scored the PK in the 51st minute. 

For the next ten minutes the Runners maintaned possession but as the Coyotes got more physical they managed to get a goal in the 71st minute. 

Quickly following the Coyotes' goal, Mikey Maldonado scored a banger from kickoff to set the Runners ahead for the rest of the game. 

Sixteen year old Kyle Miller, ended his debut game with the Runners and first open cup appearance with 3 saves. 

The Runners play this Saturday at the University of Texas at San Antonio's Campus Recreation Field Complex - South starting at 8:00pm, against Coyotes FC again for UPSL regular season standing. Watch live on Facebook and YouTube at @sarunnerssc
